Flocks of Socks

Jan 2020

The laundry basket is overflowing, the timer is ticking, and socks everywhere!

Built for Global Game Jam 2020, we took the official jam theme Repair and with a little bad handwriting read it as Re-pair: as in, making things pairs again.

Because let’s be honest, everyone hates doing laundry, especially when you're left with a mountain of mismatched footwear. In Flocks of Socks, you and a friend have to match up as many identical pairs as possible against the clock.

The Input Hack: Shared Controller Co-op

Originally, we architected this frantic sorting sim to be played with Nintendo Joy-Cons. However, to make it accessible for standard setups, we built a custom layout designed for a single Xbox 360 controller shared between two players. It's designed for 2-player co-op sharing/fighting over the controller.

  • Player 1: Controls the left hand with the Left Joystick and grabs socks with the Left Trigger (LT).
  • Player 2: Controls the right hand with the Right Joystick and grabs socks with the Right Trigger (RT).
  • Manoeuvre your hand over a wild sock, clamp down on the trigger, drag it over to its matching partner, and boom—point secured. Rinse and repeat before the buzzer sounds!

The Jam Crew

This domestic crisis simulator was brought to life by a fantastic, multi-disciplinary jam team:

  • Me
  • Rebecca
  • Emelie
  • Phil
  • Alan
  • Andrew

Think your sorting reflex is up to scratch? Grab a friend, claim your side of the gamepad, and download the build over at Flocks of Socks on Itch.io.
